Students raised $1400 this morning in a fundraiser for earthquake relief in Haiti. The 15 students, who were from various grades and clubs, spread out across campus and requested donations from students, parents and faculty coming into school.
A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti on Jan. 12. Current estimates place the death toll at 50,000, with three million injured.
Nearly 50 students met in the lecture hall to brainstorm fundraising ideas on Jan. 14, according to Prevention/Intervention counselor Rich Catrambone.
“We came up with many ideas such as going to basketball games, putting up posters, an auction,” Catrambone said. “ But our first step was to get out there and start collecting money, and I think the results were very impressive.”
“What’s so nice is that every single group from South is chipping in," senior Molly Weinstein said. "I know that the Invisible Children concert is giving 15% of its profits, the Winter Prom is giving a portion of their profits also. Every single person is doing what they can, even the groups whose main focus may not be this kind of stuff.”
Through these fundraisers and events, students hope to raise $20,000 for the relief effort.
