About The Lion's Roar

The Lion's Roar is a student-run newspaper of Newton South High School. We publish monthly with articles regarding the school and Newton.

The Lion's Roar is a winner of the Pacemaker award at the National Scholastic Press Association's (NSPA) annual conference, which according NSPA is "the Pulitzer Prize of high school journalism." The Lion's Roar also placed well in the Massachusetts Press Association's Award for General Excellence at Suffolk University. The Lion's Roar also placed 10th in the nation for "Best of Show" in Philadelphia at the NSPA's annual convention. In 2008 at the NSPA convention in St. Louis, The Lion's Roar earned 6th place.

The Lion's Roar contains a group of excellent staff. In 2007, our editors-in-chief finished first and second in the 2007 JEA Massachusetts Journalist of the Year Award. One was also published in "The Best Teen Writing of 2007" for a story she wrote, and received a Gold Award from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards. One of the editors-in-chief for the 08-09 year placed second in the "Story of the Year" category for sports writing and first in the same category the next year. Five of the students earned highest and second highest distinction in the NSPA annual convention in Philadelphia and various students earned Superior, Excellent, and honorable Mentions for their write-off competitions in St. Louis. In 2010, our editor-in-chief Sascha Bercovitch was awarded the Journalist of the Year award.

Editorial policy

The Lion’s Roar, founded in 1984, is the student newspaper of Newton South High School, acting as a public forum for student views and attitudes.

The Lion’s Roar’s right to freedom of expression is protected by the Massachusetts Student Free Expression Law (Mass. Gen. Laws Ann. ch. 71, Section 82). All content decisions are made by student editors, and the content of The Lion’s Roar in no way reflects the official policy of Newton South, its faculty, or its administration.

Editorials are the official opinion of The Lion’s Roar, while opinions and letters are the personal viewpoints of the writers and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of The Lion’s Roar. The Lion’s Roar reserves the right to edit all submitted content, and to reject advertising copy for resubmission of new copy that is deemed acceptable by student editors and to make decisions regarding the submission of letters to the editors, which are welcomed.

The Lion’s Roar is printed by Seacoast Newspapers and published every four weeks by Newton South Students. All of our funding comes from advertisers.

In-school distribution of The Lion’s Roar is free, but each copy of the paper shall cost one dollar for each copy more than ten (10) that is taken by any individual or by many individuals on behalf of a single individual. Violation of this policy shall constitute theft.
